Pastor Russ was born in Moscow, Idaho, and grew up in Colfax, Wash., a small wheat-farming town on the east side of the state. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1976 and attended Whitworth University, a small Presbyterian liberal arts school in Spokane, Wash. In 1980 he graduated with a bachelor's degree in History, a minor in English and a Secondary Teaching Certificate. He spent three years substitute teaching and doing church camping and youth work at a small UCC church in Spokane, Wash.
He graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, Pa., in 1986. As a student, he completed three years as an intern at Peace UCC in Denver, Pa. Pastor Russ was ordained in October 1986 and in 2016 celebrated 30 years of ordained ministry.
Pastor Russ has served churches in the Pacific Northwest Conference, Penn Southeast Conference and Penn Central Conference. He has been an active volunteer for the Conference, Association and Ecumenical organizations and in the community. Prior to coming to Emmanuel, he served Newport UCC in Newport, Wash., where he also volunteered in 4th and 6th grade classrooms in two local elementary schools and as a member of the Eastside Committee on Ministry for the Pacific NW Conference.
Pastor Russ’s partner is Jamis Reilly, who goes by "Jay" or "Reilly," who is a Spokane native.
Pastor Russ’s interests include traveling, gardening, anything historical, church choir, reading (mostly history) art (particularly Renaissance and Impressionist), music (especially Baroque and Classical) attending the symphony and opera when possible, church potlucks and being invited to dinner.
He has two sons, Schane, 28, who lives in Long Beach, Calif., and Andrew, 27, who lives in Baltimore. Pastor Russ also has a very spoiled Bichon Frise dog named Eli.
